Service Record

Basic training at Fort Bragg

Enlisted at 19 and shipped out to Fort Bragg in 1965. Learned to make his bunk with a quarter that bounced.

First tour, Vietnam

Landed in country in 1966 as an infantryman with the 9th Regiment. Wrote to Mom every Sunday.

Home again, quiet

Returned to Concord, married Ruth, and started building the life he had been carrying around in his head the whole time.

Retirement

Retired in 1987 after 22 years of service. Traded fatigues for a shop apron and started teaching neighborhood kids how to work with wood.

About Their Service

Robert James Whitfield was born in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1946. He served twenty-two years in the United States Army before returning home to raise his family in Concord.
